Es Pontas is a famous landmark in Mallorca, and very popular with rock climbers. For me though, the challenge was to convey the feeling of the almost completely translucent water as viewed from above, with the coral just below the surface.
As with all my paintings, I make studies on site and then reconstruct the painting back in the studio, using the old tried and tested grid system.
Once again, I have used traditional layered glazing techniques to achieve a more vibrant effect. This involves mixing the paint pigment with a mixture of oils and varnishes and then applying the mixed glaze in layers on to the canvas.
