Bellver Castle built in the Gothic style, is a rare example of a classic round castle. It was built in the 14th century for King James the II of Mallorca. It stands in a commanding position three kilometres west of the city of Palma on the island of Mallorca.
On a quick winter visit to Palma with my wife, I was blown away by the incredible spectacle unfolding before me. Unlike the traditional sunsets I was used to with the sun at the centre of the show, here there was a play between the winter cloud cover and light from the red and orange spectrum. As the sun disappears over the horizon only the shorter waves of light reach our eyes and we see these delicious deep reds and oranges reflected off the cloud cover.
In a strange way, the castle was just an excuse to capture the light show over the city of Palma on that memorable evening.
I have used special glazes mixed in with the paint to enhance the luminosity in the colours.
