Port de Soller is a picturesque little village situated in a large horseshoe bay by the same name on the west coast of the paradise Mediterranean island of Mallorca. I have often visited this stunning location, vowing one day to capture the view in oils. It's isolated location meant it was one of the island's best kept secrets until the "Soller tunnel" opened in the 1990's opening the floodgates for tourism. A must, and a favourite of mine when visiting Soller, is the tram ride from the old town down to the Port.
This scene is a classic elevated view out to sea across the port. At this height the horizon is extended which creates the sense of distance that i'm always striving to achieve in my paintings.
I have used the old tried and tested layered glaze techniques which although somewhat time consuming, achieves translucency and vibrancy in the colours.
